چکیده
Abstract Whether ocean iron fertilization in high nutrient low chlorophyll (HNLC) regions is a practical geoengineering strategy to combat climate warming has been debated because the fate of absorbed carbon by remains unclear. We use an optimized oceanic biogeochemical inverse model explore equilibrium responses increased productivity major HNLC regions. find that overall downward shift nutrients and from surface intermediate deep waters with maximal Southern Ocean (SO), North Pacific (NP) eastern equatorial (EP). The efficiency soft tissue pump 37.8%, 2.7% 5.4% SO, EP NP simulation while atmospheric CO 2 concentration drawn down 45.1, 3.4 6.7 ppm, respectively. Meanwhile, global mean oxygen decreased 21.1%, 1.3% 2.4% simulation, accompanied expansion minimum zones 400%, 26% 63%, Our study indicates potential be effective approach mitigate but also strong impact on development hypoxia.

Simulated biogeochemical responses to iron enrichments in three high nutrient, low chlorophyll (HNLC) regions
To fill temporal gaps in iron-enrichment experimental data and gain further understanding of marine ecosystem responses to iron enrichments, we apply a fifteen-compartment ecosystem model to three iron-enrichment sites, namely SEEDS (the Subarctic Pacific Iron Experiment for Ecosystem Dynamics Study; 48.5 N, 165 E) in the western North Pacific, SOIREE (the Southern Ocean Iron RElease Experiment...
متن کاملThe significance of the episodic nature of atmospheric deposition to Low Nutrient Low Chlorophyll regions
In the vast Low Nutrient Low-Chlorophyll (LNLC) Ocean, the vertical nutrient supply from the subsurface to the sunlit surface waters is low, and atmospheric contribution of nutrients may be one order of magnitude greater over short timescales. The short turnover time of atmospheric Fe and N supply (<1month for nitrate) further supports deposition being an important source of nutrients in LNLC r...
متن کاملLow Nitrogen Fertilization Adapts Rice Root Microbiome to Low Nutrient Environment by Changing Biogeochemical Functions
Reduced fertilizer usage is one of the objectives of field management in the pursuit of sustainable agriculture. Here, we report on shifts of bacterial communities in paddy rice ecosystems with low (LN), standard (SN), and high (HN) levels of N fertilizer application (0, 30, and 300 kg N ha(-1), respectively). The LN field had received no N fertilizer for 5 years prior to the experiment. The LN...
متن کاملSalt marsh ecosystem biogeochemical responses to nutrient enrichment: a paired 15N tracer study.
We compared processing and fate of dissolved NO3- in two New England salt marsh ecosystems, one receiving natural flood tide concentrations of approximately 1-4 micromol NO3-/ L and the other receiving experimentally fertilized flood tides containing approximately 70-100 micromol NO3-/ L. We conducted simultaneous 15NO3- (isotope) tracer additions from 23 to 28 July 2005 in the reference (8.4 h...
متن کاملBiogeochemical Processes and Implications for Nutrient Cycling
The availability and cycling of nutrients is determined by an interaction of physical, chemical, and biological processes in an ecosystem. This interaction of processes, collectively known as biogeochemistry, is important as it determines the forms, transformations, and ultimate fate of nutrients in a given system. This chapter focuses on biogeochemical processes in springs and spring runs with...
